Creating an Assignment or Assessment with Multiple Attempts

This guide pertains to Ultra Course View.

If your course is in Original Course View, see the Original Course View tutorial collection.

In the settings of your assignment or test, you may allow students to submit more than one attempt. Multiple attempts change how the graded item’s final grade is calculated.

Procedure

1. Enter your Blackboard course of choice. Locate and click on the assignment that you plan to modify.

2. Selecting the assignment will bring you to a new page. In this page, click on the gear icon in the top-right corner. Doing so will open a small tab on the right side of your screen.

3. In this new tab, scroll down to the “Grading and Submissions” area. Here, you may select your desired number of attempts.

4. Changing the allowed number of attempts will create a new box titled “Attempts to Grade”. Clicking the drop-down box will allow the user to select between the following options:

5. Selecting “All Attempts" will open an additional box where you may decide how said attempts will be graded.

Explanation

  • First and last attempts: Once the student completes their first or last attempt of the graded activity, only that attempt will appear in the Gradebook. This means that previous or subsequent attempts will not be visible to the instructor when reviewing or entering grades.
    • If the assignment or test is set to post grades automatically, only the grade associated with the first or last attempt will be posted.
  • All attempts: Each of the student’s attempts will appear in the Gradebook for review. The instructor must review the following “Final grade calculation” settings to ensure that the grade is posted correctly.
    • Highest and lowest grade: The attempt with the highest or lowest grade will be posted.
    • Average: Blackboard will calculate the average of each of the student’s attempts and post the final grade.

Note: The Grade Attempts setting determines how the final grade is automatically calculated, but you have the option to override the grade. Each attempt is subject to the due date you set for the assignment. If a student submits an attempt after the due date, the attempt is marked late. Attempts submitted before the deadline are shown as on time.

You can only override the final grade, not the grades for each attempt.
