Enable Respondus for Assessments

This guide pertains to Ultra Course View.

If your course is in Original Course View, see the Original Course View tutorial collection.

When to Use?

Integrate Respondus LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor to lock down & administer assessments securely in a Blackboard Ultra course. You can deliver assessments (i.e., Assignments and Tests) with Respondus to ensure students aren’t influenced by external sources when drafting and submitting attempts.

Procedure

Accessing the LockDown Browser Dashboard

There are two ways to access the LockDown Browser Dashboard. You can access the Dashboard through the Books & Tools link or Assessment Settings when setting up a new assessment. The Dashboard lists all assessments that are currently set up within your course and gives you the ability to enable LockDown Browser and Monitor for each.

Method 1: Books & Tools

1. Navigate to your Blackboard Ultra course.

2. Within your course, look for the Details and Actions panel located on the left.

3. Select Books & Tools.

4. Scroll through the list of tools and select Respondus.

5. You will be redirected to the Dashboard.

Method 2: Assessment Setting

1. Locate the assessment you would like to enable Respondus on, click on the assessment title.

2. This will open the Content and Settings page of the assessment. On the right-hand side of the page, click on the gear icon located next to Assessment Settings.

3. Scroll through the settings until you reach Assessment security.

4. Look for Respondus and click on the LockDown Browser Dashboard link.

5. You will be redirected to the Dashboard.

Enable Respondus for an Assessment

Within the LockDown Browser Dashboard, a list of deployed assessments in the course is displayed. Each assessment has its own individual settings when it comes to using Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor.

NOTE:

  • Tests labeled with Required, require students to use LockDown Browser.
  • Tests labeled with Not Required, do not require students to use LockDown Browser.

1. To change the settings for an assessment, click on the downward arrow next to the title and select Settings from the context menu.

2. Select the button next to Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam to enable LockDown Browser for that assessment

3. By default, the setting Require LockDown Browser to view feedback and results is checked. You can also:

  1. Lock student into the browser until exam is completed - Students won't be able to exit the exam until they complete and submit their work. You can provide an optional password for students or other course members for who you want to provide an exception.
  2. Allow students to take this exam with an iPad - If this setting is not selected, students must complete the assessment on a desktop computer.
  3. Allow access to specific external web domains - If you want to allow students to access certain websites while they work on the assessment, you can specify those under this setting.
  4. Enable Calculator on the toolbar - Allow students to access a digital calculator while working on the exam.
  5. Enable Printing from the toolbar - Allow students to print the assessment while it's open.

6. Click Save and Close to apply changes to the settings.

7. To enable Respondus Monitor, select Require Respondus Monitor - Students must use a personal device & webcam during the assessment. Students are guided through the startup process and then recorded during the assessment. Suspicious events are flagged for the instructor, and assessment attempts are ranked according to risk. The proctoring results and video can be viewed by the instructor after the assessment attempts have been submitted for grading.

8. With Respondus Monitor enabled, you can define a startup sequence of events that students must complete prior to accessing the assessment. Some items are required while others may be editable or optional. You can drag and drop the settings to reorder the startup sequence.

  1. Webcam check (required) - This step is enabled by default and can't be turned off. The Webcam Check verifies that the student's webcam is connected and transmitting video as needed.
  2. Additional instructions (editable) - You can include specific instructions to let the student know your expectations for the proctored assessment.
  3. Guidelines & tips (optional)
  4. Take student photo (optional) - You can require the student to take a photo of themselves before they begin the assessment.
  5. Show student ID (optional) - You can require the student to show their identification before they begin the assessment. This is useful for large courses where you or another grader may not be able to associate a student's face with their name.
  6. Environment check (optional) - You can ask the student to record a short video of their surroundings to confirm that they have no notes, books, or other devices nearby to help them with their submission.
  7. Facial detection check (required)

9. Click Save and Close to apply changes to the settings.
