A quota restriction is in place on the Blackboard system which limits the overall size of a course site (shell) within Blackboard. The quota is necessary to properly manage storage resources and ensure adequate system performance.
Note: The size limit for uploading an individual file to Blackboard is 125 Megabytes. Larger files should be separated into two individual files or compress any images to reduce size.
The overall size of any course site in Blackboard is limited to 1 GB.
A warning will be sent to the instructor should their course go over 920MB.
Once the course quota is reached or it is close the limit, an error message will be produced and additional uploads can not be completed.
Note: The removal of files (or attachments) from content areas of the course will NOT allow additional content to be uploaded. Refer to the "Quota Tips and Tricks" article for further information and recommended actions.
Course instructors may request quota exceptions via the CMU Help Desk after removing all unused files from the files area and moving all video files to the Panopto/Chipcast website. Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and alternative storage options such as Chipcast may also be recommended. Extremely large files may be difficult for students to access and in some cases are the result of improper production techniques and/or chosen file formats. Consult support staff for assistance with compression and management of large files.
