Overview
Socratic Questioning
The Socratic Questioning conversation type moves students through a series of questions over specific content items in the course. Socratic Questioning conversations encourage students to think critically through continuous questioning. The AI persona will not confirm or reject any student response but moves students through a series of questions. At the end of the conversation, students reflect on the activity, highlighting weaknesses or strengths in their learning, or if the AI bot showed bias, hallucinations, or inaccuracies. The topic selected by the instructor should be open-ended, with no right or wrong answer, and should provide thought-provoking questions that aim for deeper reflection.
Role-Play
The Role-Play AI Conversations feature allows students to interact with an AI persona. You are in control of this persona in terms of its personality, knowledge, and role in the interaction.
The conversations can continue indefinitely and the student is prompted to write a reflection before submitting their work. Role-play conversations are low-stakes activities that encourage the student to experiment with means of approaching your designed scenario. During these conversations, the AI will prompt students with open-ended questions and responses, allowing them to demonstrate their knowledge of the relevant process or procedure. Another upside of the AI conversations feature is its convenience. Students may begin the conversation at any time, eliminating the necessity of coordinating with group members. These discussions can be dropped and resumed as needed, so long as the student submits their work before the deadline.
AI Conversation Examples
Socratic Questioning
Attached to this article are (3) Word Document examples of Socratic Questioning Conversations that demonstrate the type of prompt to be provided and how a conversation can play out.
Role Play
Below are several examples of the roles that the AI may take on during these conversations. Note that you may configure the personality as needed to improve the experience.
Patient
The AI can play the role of a patient suffering from a physical or mental condition. Students would be prompted to diagnose this condition and offer treatment options, all while ensuring that this information is delivered appropriately based on the situation’s context and the AI client’s preferences. This scenario would require students to ask relevant questions, reflecting on their phrasing and the AI's responses.
Historical Figure
AI could also play the role of a historical figure, whether this be a significant person (i.e., president) or someone living within a specified period and location. Students may demonstrate their knowledge of the political or physical environment by asking questions and addressing problems that the AI would hypothetically have experienced in their respective era.
Customer Service
The AI could role-play as an agitated customer who is attempting to fix an issue. The student must display their de-escalation skills and their knowledge of the problem. Students may also be prompted to be mindful of the relevant policies and procedures as they troubleshoot the issue, being mindful to not further upset the AI character.
Debate Opponent
The AI can take on the role of an opponent for the student to debate. When given an argumentative personality, AI will often ask questions and prompt students to provide thoughtful responses asking them to justify their points.
