Bulk Deleting All Content in Blackboard Shell

Bulk Delete Overview

When incorrect content has been copied into a shell and it is desired to wipe the shell clean and start over, here are the steps to complete a Bulk Delete:

  • From the 3-dot menu next to the magnifying glass, select Batch Edit:Batch Edit

  • In the Batch Edit menu, click on Item at the top left of the screen to select all content items to delete.  NOTE:  You can only delete 100 content items at a time.  If more than 100 items need to be deleted, you must repeat this step to remove all content items.  The count of content items is displayed in the lower left corner once items have been selected.  Once items have been checked, click on Delete Items in the lower right corner.

Batch Edit - Deleting Multiple Items

  • Once content items have been removed using the Batch Edit - Delete function, additional content items will need to be removed from these areas:
    • Announcements
    • Discussions
    • Groups (if groups were created in the course)
    • Question Banks (accessible from the Details & Actions menu located on the right side of the Content tab)
    • Any manually created columns in the Gradebook

NOTE:  The above items are not accessible through the Batch Edit - Delete function and instead will need to be removed individually from their respective location within the course.

  • The final item to clean out is the Unused Files in the course. To do this, return to the 3-dot menu by the magnifying glass and select Unused Files:

Unused Files Menu Option

  • Files no longer in use in the course, display here.  Click the checkbox next to File Name to select all files, then Delete Files.  NOTE:  If multiple pages of unused files exist in the course, you may need to repeat this process until all files have been removed.
