Overview
Students can be randomly assigned by Blackboard to groups you choose. There needs to be at least (4) students in the course for the system to randomly assign students to at least two groups. To create a Random Assign group, see the Group Creation tutorial.
Random assignment may work best if you teach courses that contain many students without the opportunity to know them individually. Students can be assigned to groups quickly and without preparation.
Random Group Creation
- In the Group Students menu, select Randomly Assign and provide your group a name at the top of the page.
- In the Number of Groups menu, determine how many groups you would like to create. You must create at least two groups. Students are equally assigned to the number of groups chosen to be created.
To remove all students from the current group set, select Unassign All at the top of the page. NOTE: If you move students to different groups after they've been randomly assigned and before you save, the Group Students changes to "Custom".
If desired, edit each group name if you want to change the default name. A group description can be added if desired to display to group members. You have no limit on the number of characters.
Select the purple plus sign to create more groups in addition to the ones the system created. When you add or delete groups, the menu option defaults to 'Custom' and any affected students aren't redistributed.
