Blackboard
CMU courses utilize Blackboard, a learning management system that requires specific hardware and software to ensure adequate performance and connectivity.
CMU recommends completing online course requirements with a PC or a laptop. While a cell phone or tablet (e.g., iPad, Kindle, Chromebook) might be compatible with the Blackboard app, some technical features are not suited for use with a mobile device; therefore, do not plan to complete online coursework with a mobile device or tablet. Use of a desktop or laptop computer with a wired internet connection is strongly recommended, particularly when taking exams - mobile devices with wireless connections are less stable and more likely to drop off, causing you to be kicked out during an exam. |
Additional third-party software may be integrated into Blackboard on a course-by-course, instructor-by-instructor basis. These various software tools may also require their own browser specifications. See requirements from each specific vendor as needed. In addition, specific requirements unique to individual courses may be required. Review the course syllabus for these requirements.
To verify if your own system meets requirements, visit Blackboard's Browser Check page.
- Recent updates to several browsers have included changes to how the browser handles third-party cookies. These changes may affect tools from other providers that integrate with Blackboard Learn. If you have trouble accessing an integrated tool after a browser upgrade, edit your browser’s settings to allow sites to save and read cookie data. You can find instructions for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge online.
- Older browsers that are not currently supported may no longer function properly with this change.
Webex
Some instructors may choose to use the Webex Conferencing Tool to hold real-time meetings for all course attendees. As such, you may be required to attend Webex meetings. Communication and collaboration within the online environment can be greatly enhanced through the use of a headset with microphone. It is strongly recommended that students purchase a combo headset microphone for active participation in synchronous Webex sessions.
To verify if your own system meets requirements, visit the Webex System Requirements page.
Respondus LockDown Browser / Monitor
Some courses may require the use of Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) to take online exams. If this is the case, the LDB application must be downloaded and installed onto the student's computer and used to take the exam, in place of using a standard web browser. Some online courses may also require the use of a webcam. Webcams are required in courses using Respondus Lockdown Browser with Monitor as the exam security method.

NOTE: Some instructors may add additional content to their courses from 3rd party courseware tools which are not part of Blackboard. A few examples include: Pearson MyLabs, Macmillan LaunchPad, and McGraw Hill Connect, although there are many other courseware platforms and online learning activities that may be used. The technical requirements for those systems might be different than the usual Blackboard settings. Be sure to read and follow recommendations from your instructor or the outside provider.
