Overview
Panopto Capture allows a user to easily record audio, video, and entire screens or application windows. A user can access Panopto Capture from directly within their browser, and no download is required. Use this documentation only covers recording and sharing audio and video from a webcam. How -To Video: Record and Share A Video Using Panopto Capture (7:41)
Pre-Requisites
The latest version of: Chrome, Edge (Chromium-based), or Firefox browsers on Windows 10, macOS 10.15 or higher, or the latest ChromeOS. Capture is also in beta for Chrome and Firefox browsers on Android 9 or higher.
NOTE: Please make sure anti-virus exceptions are made for audio (microphone), video (web camera), and screen in your preferred browser. Panopto plans to add support for Safari on desktop soon.
Login to Panopto Capture
- To create a video, first log into the Chipcast website at http://chipcast.cmich.edu.
- Click Create > Panopto Capture
- A new tab will open with the Panopto Capture app running as shown below
Select an Audio Source
- To select the microphone to use with the recording, click the microphone icon in the upper left corner of Panopto Capture (Fig. 3)

- Each microphone connected to your computer will appear as a button in the preview area. Select the desired microphone by clicking on a button (Fig. 4)

Talking at a normal volume will allow you to test your microphones. The bar at the left of each box indicates how well the microphone is picking up audio. Select a microphone that shows green in this bar. If yellow or red is showing, the video's audio may be distorted (Fig. 5). If no green is showing, the microphone is not picking up audio.

Select Camera Sources
- To record a camera source, select the camera icon in the upper center of Panopto Capture (Fig. 6). If you do not want to record any cameras, you can skip this step

- Each camera connected to your computer will show up as a button in the preview area. Each button will show a preview of each camera. Select the desired camera(s) by clicking on the button(s) (Fig. 7)

Select Screen and Application Sources
Mac users, please note: Depending on the browser you are using, you may need to give additional permission for Chrome or Firefox to access your screen before recording a PowerPoint presentation. Please note: When recording more than one secondary source, the source selected last will be displayed to viewers as a default.
1. To record a screen, application window, or individual browser tab, select the monitor icon (Fig. 14).

2. Chrome or Edge (Chromium-based) users: a pop-up window will appear that allows you to select between a screen, application, or browser tab:
2.a. To record everything that happens on a screen, choose Your Entire Screen. Then, select the screen to record and click Share. (Fig. 15). Optionally, select Share Audio to add the audio from your computer to the recording. This is ideal for when you are recording a video call or any application that has sound. The Share Audio option is not available to macOS users on the Your Entire Screen tab.

2.b. Select the Application Window tab to record everything that happens in one application window only. Select the application and then click Share (Fig. 16). Please note: For Windows users, after starting the recording, Panopto will record PowerPoint slides as a video stream when a presentation is put into slideshow mode. For Mac users, you will need to make sure the slideshow is started in the option under the screen in Capture. If you are a Firefox user, please see How to Record PowerPoint with Firefox and Capture. The Share Audio option is not available on the Application Window tab.

2.c. Select the Tab option, shown here in Chrome, to record everything that happens in one browser tab. Select the tab you want to record and click Share. (Fig. 17). Optionally, select Share audio to add the audio from the tab to the recording

3. Firefox users: a permissions pop-up window will appear (Fig. 18). To learn how to capture PowerPoint using Firefox, please visit How to Record PowerPoint with Firefox and Capture.

3.a. Select the drop-down menu Select Window or Screen to pick the window, application, or screen you want to share (Fig. 19). Note: To display a specific browser tab, you will need to make sure that the tab is open in a separate browser window for it to appear as an option. To update the list of windows or screens that appear, refresh Firefox. Firefox does not allow for audio capture from windows or screens.

4. After choosing one screen or application source, you may add additional sources by selecting the monitor icon again.
Recording the Video
To begin recording your video, click the red circle button at the bottom center of Panopto Capture (Fig. 8).

If enabled, you will see a 5-second countdown on the screen, and then the recording will begin.
To stop recording, select the red square button at the bottom center of Panopto Capture (Fig. 9). The video will immediately begin to upload. Do not close the Panopto Capture browser tab until the upload is complete.

Video Upload and Processing
Once the recording is stopped, you will be taken to a new page, and the video will begin to upload to the Chipcast / Panopto server. You will see the video's upload progress and then a message that states Getting your video ready for editing: It's safe to close your browser window in the top left corner (Fig. 10a). Do not close the browser tab before you see this message. This will automatically change to Your video is ready once the video has processed completely (Fig. 10b).
NOTE: This video will upload to the folder that you were in when you opened Capture. If you do not have Creator access to that folder, it will upload to your My Folder. If you do not have a My Folder set up, it will upload to your most recently used folder.

If you are not happy with the video you have produced, you can select Redo from the top right corner to return to Panopto Capture (Fig. 11).

If you would like to film another video, select Record New from the top right corner to return to Panopto Capture (Fig. 12).

Change the name and description for your video using the text boxes on the right side of the screen (Fig. 13a). If you need to change the folder your video will be shared to, type the name of the folder or use the drop-down menu to choose from your Panopto folders (Fig. 13a). To open your folder in the Panopto site on a new tab, select the pop-out icon to the right of the folder name (Fig. 13b).

To open your video in the Editor, select the Edit button (Fig. 14).

Sharing
- Select Manage Access (Fig. 16a). Once selected, your Panopto site will open to the video's settings Share tab (Fig. 16b)

- Click the word 'Change' (Fig. 16b) then set permissions to Anyone at your organization with the link (Fig. 16c).

- Finally, click 'Copy Link' at the bottom of the page (fig. 16d) to copy the video link to the clipboard and paste it as needed.
