Top Hat

Top Hat (TH) is a 100% web-based solution that enables faculty to interact with in-room and online audience members via web-enabled devices (smart phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers). Questions, prompts, polls, discussions, formative assessments, and more can be included into any presentation style or software to boost interest, engagement, and interaction. TH offers functionality to assign homework, course notes, questions packs, slide decks, handouts, and more. Faculty can also adopt and/or author interactive electronic textbooks and other Open Education Resources from TH Catalog.

From 2016 – 2024, TH was recognized as CMU’s enterprise level classroom/audience response tool. Effective November 2024, all TH overviews, training, and technical support are provided entirely by the vendor.

Student notes

  • Students using the system as part of a course are required to purchase a subscription code from the CMU Bookstore and create a Top Hat account using your CMU email address in the form of globalid@cmich.edu. Using any other email or non-global id format will result in you not receiving points for interaction and homework.

The cost of a subscription code is determined via an agreement between TH and the CMU Bookstore.
