Blackboard: Announcement Notification FAQs

Bb Notifications

Students and Instructors receive Announcement Notifications to their CMU email once per day via the 11 PM Blackboard Daily Notification Email.  This notification indicates there is a new announcement in the course and does not share the message of the announcement -- users have to access the course to view the message.  If the instructor opts to Send the Announcement Via Email as well as post it in the shell, then students will receive the full announcement message. If it is desired to receive individual Announcement Notification Emails within 20-30 minutes of the Announcement creation, users can adjust their notification settings on the Bb Homepage in the tab bearing their name.

Each user will need to adjust their Email Notification settings from "Email me once a day" to "Email me right away".

1. Access your Profile Information in Blackboard.  (click on your name as shown below)

2. Select "Email Notifications".

3. Select the "Email me right away" setting and click the "Save" button.

FAQs

Q1. I am an instructor and use the Announcements tool in Blackboard. When I create an announcement, I receive multiple copies of it via email. Why is this? Do my students also receive multiple copies?
A1.
If you teach a large class (100+), Blackboard sends notification emails in batches of 100. If your roster exceeds 100, multiple email batches will be sent to accommodate the large size. You will receive an email for each batch that is sent.

Q2. Why do some announcement emails appear to be generated from no-reply@cmich.edu?
A2.
Emails generated from Announcements that DO NOT have the "Send a copy of this announcement immediately" box checked are sent using the Blackboard system email (no-reply@cmich.edu). Student can not reply to these messages.  Any replies to Announcement emails will be sent to no-reply@cmich.edu and will receive the following message, redirecting them to re-send their reply to the correct email address:

"If you replied to an announcement notification from Blackboard, your message did not reach the intended recipient. Some announcement notifications originate from the system administrator account (no-reply@cmich.edu), not from the announcement's author. In this case, your message should be resent using the ‘Send Email’ feature within Blackboard."

Q3. How can an Instructor create an Announcement Notification Email that the students can reply to and the Instructor will receive?

A3. When creating an Announcement the "Send a copy of this announcement immediately" box must be checked.  This will result in the Announcement Email coming from the Instructor's email address and the students will be able to reply to these messages.
