Body

Faculty/Staff Account Overview

Faculty/Staff accounts at Central Michigan University (CMU) are provided to all active university employees, including full-time, part-time, temporary, and adjunct personnel (unless they are otherwise marked for a role with limited technology needs). These accounts serve as the primary means of accessing university systems, communications tools, and digital resources required for teaching, research, and administrative work. Accounts are typically created automatically as part of the on boarding process and remain active for the duration of employment.

Email Access

Faculty and staff are provided with a CMU email account through Microsoft Outlook (Exchange Online), included as part of their Microsoft 365 A5 license. Email addresses typically follow the format GID@cmich.edu.

Mailbox Details:

  • Mailbox Size: 100 GB (default for Exchange Online Plan 2, included with A5)
  • Message Size Limit: 150 MB per email (including attachments)

Email can be accessed via:

  • Webmail: https://mail.cmich.edu
  • Desktop Clients: Microsoft Outlook for Windows or macOS
  • Mobile Devices: Outlook mobile app or native mail apps

CMU email is the official communication method for university business and academic correspondence. Mailboxes remain active for the duration of employment. Upon separation, email access is typically disabled in accordance to our user separation procedures.

Storage Access

Each Faculty/Staff account includes access to the following Storage Solutions:

Microsoft OneDrive

  • Storage: 1TB of cloud-based storage for work-related documents.
  • Secure access from any device
  • File sharing with colleagues and students
  • Real-time collaboration on Microsoft Office documents

Udrive

Udrive offers a simple file share for each individual that is automatically mapped on login for most CMU devices.

In addition to these solutions, some departments may offer access to shared network drives or Microsoft Teams file repositories. Sensitive data (e.g., FERPA or HIPAA-covered information) should only be stored in approved, secure locations in accordance with CMU data policies.

Software and Application Access

Faculty and staff have access to a range of licensed software tools and university systems that support academic and administrative responsibilities. These include:

  • Microsoft 365 Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, OneNote, etc. (Desktop and Web versions)
  • Academic Tools: Blackboard, Panopto, etc.
  • Administrative Systems: SA and SuccessFactors
  • Security Tools: Multi-factor authentication (MFA), VPN, and antivirus protection

Software availability may vary based on role or department, and installations on personal devices may require sign-in with your CMU credentials.
