Background
Stata (also known as "StataNow") is a statistical data analysis application that is used by researchers in various fields across Central Michigan University.
Availability
Historically, Stata had been purchased in limited quantities across the University restricted to individuals, or departments.
In October of 2024, the College of Business Administration determined that given the existing need within it's researchers and graduate courses combined with the known needs elsewhere at CMU, it made sense to pursue the purchase of a site license for Stata MP 2-core.
The site license makes Stata (MP 2-core) available for use on all CMU faculty, staff and student systems.
Install Stata on CMU-Owned Windows Computers Through Software Center
Stata should be available as an application within Software Center.
- Search for "Software Center" in the Windows Start Menu and open it.
- Click on the "Applications" tab in Software Center and look for "StataNow MP..." and select it.
- Click the "Install" button.
If you cannot find Stata within Software Center, ask your local IT support group for assistance.
Install Stata on CMU-Owned Windows Computers Through Company Portal
If your CMU-owned Windows computer does not have Software Center, then it may be managed by Intune and instead, have a similar offering called "Company Portal".
Follow the instructions in this KB article on how to install applications such as Stata using Intune/Company Portal.
Install Stata on CMU-Owned Mac Computers Through CMU Self Service
CMU-owned and managed macOS computers should have an application called "CMU Self Service" that provides access to installation of many commonly install applications, including Stata. Follow the instructions in this KB article on how to install applications on CMU owned and managed macOS devices using CMU Self Service.
Install Stata on a Personally-Owned Windows or Mac Computer
CMU is licensed to allow the installation of Stata on personal devices. This requires a license serial number and code that must be requested using the Licensed Software Access & Support form.
Use Stata within Virtual Desktop Environments
Stata is currently installed and available for use in these CMU virtual desktop offerings:
- CBA Virtual Lab for students currently enrolled in College of Business Administration courses.
- Specifically within the "CBA-LAB-A" and "CBA-LAB-B" virtual desktops.
- Citrix Workspace for students currently enrolled in relevant College of Science and Engineering courses.
- Specifically within the "Math Lab" and "BIO-CHM-EAS-PHY-CPS Lab"
Stata is scheduled to be made available in the general use CMU Virtual Lab (for all students) beginning in the Spring 2025 semester.
