Although image files can also be added using the "Create Item" and "Create File" feature, using the "Create Image" option in Blackboard is recommended as it eliminates the need for students to click on the image to view it, as images added using this method will appear directly in Blackboard. Create Image also allows you to more easily modify the displayed image size in Blackboard. Allowable image formats include: .gif, .jif, .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .tiff, and .wmf. See the FAQ section below for additional information.
- Enter the course and click Edit Mode On (Edit mode is in the upper right corner of the page).
- In the course menu, click on the content area where the image is to be placed.
- Hover over the Build Content menu and select Image.

- Under Image Options:
- 5.1. Select the desired option for Dimensions. Original is recommended as the image will appear undistorted. If custom is selected, enter a pixel size for Set Width and Set Height.
- 5.2. For Border, select the desired setting. The larger the number, the thicker the border will be.
- 5.3. For Image Target URL, enter a URL or Web Link if desired. This will allow students to click on the image and be redirected to the Web address entered in this field.
- 5.4. For Open Target in New Window, select Yes or No as desired. This will define how the URL entered above will open. (Default is new window)
- 5.5. To Add Alignment to Content, select Yes or No based on your preference.
- Under Standard Options:
- 6.1. Select Yes or No for Permit Users to View Content Item. In order for students to see the image, Yes must be selected.
- 6.2. Select Yes or No for Track Number of Views.
- 6.3. Select Date and Time Restrictions as desired.
- Click Submit when finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is the difference between adding an Image and adding a File/Item?
A1. While nearly the same outcome can be accomplished with either content type, adding an image as a File or Item will require that students click the link to view/download the image. Use of the Create Image option avoids this by displaying the image directly in the Blackboard content area.
